Scrub Jay

The Big Scrub area of the Ocala National Forest is a great place to find Scrub Jays, especially in the winter.  I frequently see unbanded birds which is a real plus for photographers.  This bird was apparently the lookout because he was tracking me and making a tremendous amount of noise.  As you drive the forest roads you might also spot a variety of other birds, raptors, deer, turkey, fox, and rarely a bear or bobcat.  I frequently see fresh bear tracks but have only had a couple of brief sightings.  There are also numerous gopher tortoises and a variety of snakes including eastern and pygmy rattlers.  I strongly advise taking the time to check and see if it's hunting season and which areas of the forest are open for hunting.
